Pattern, like rhythm, is built on repetition. But it is associated with an area and not a direction. Patterns should be directionless and usually make better backgrounds than subjects. The symmetry of patterns can be emphasized by including a point to break the repetition.

Patterns encourage the eye to roam around the photograph. By extending patterns to and beyond the frame, the phenomenon of continuation occurs, just like with rhythm.
